What is a country calling code?
A country calling code (also called country dialing code or international subscriber dialing code) is a 1 to 3 digit prefix you dial before the national phone number when calling internationally. Country codes are defined by the ITU-T E.164 recommendation and grouped into nine zones across the world.
The nine ITU zones
- Zone 1 โ North American Numbering Plan: USA, Canada and most Caribbean countries (+1)
- Zone 2 โ Mostly Africa: Egypt (+20), Morocco (+212), South Africa (+27)
- Zone 3 โ Europe (part): UK (+44), Netherlands (+31), Belgium (+32), France (+33), Spain (+34)
- Zone 4 โ Europe (part): Hungary (+36), Italy (+39), Romania (+40), Switzerland (+41)
- Zone 5 โ Mexico, Central & South America: Mexico (+52), Cuba (+53), Argentina (+54), Brazil (+55)
- Zone 6 โ Southeast Asia & Oceania: Malaysia (+60), Australia (+61), Indonesia (+62), Singapore (+65)
- Zone 7 โ Russia & Kazakhstan: shared (+7)
- Zone 8 โ East Asia & satellite: Japan (+81), Korea (+82), Vietnam (+84), China (+86)
- Zone 9 โ Western Asia, Middle East & some Africa: Turkey (+90), India (+91), Pakistan (+92), UAE (+971)
How to dial internationally
- Dial your international exit code (00 from most countries, 011 from USA/Canada) or simply + on mobile
- Add the country code (without leading zero)
- Then the national subscriber number, dropping the leading 0 if present
Example: a French mobile number written locally as 06 12 34 56 78 becomes +33 6 12 34 56 78 when dialed from abroad.
Common gotchas
- +1 covers many countries: USA, Canada, Bahamas, Jamaica, Trinidad, Puerto Rico โ the area code disambiguates
- +7 is shared between Russia and Kazakhstan
- +44, +33, +49 require you to drop the leading 0 (e.g. UK 07911... becomes +44 7911...)
- NANP (zone 1) uses 3-digit area codes โ same format whether you're calling Toronto or Texas
